Of Mice and Music

At Truman, there was an ongoing debate over whether or not John Cage was a composer. We beat this issue to death and never quite came to a conclusion (partly because, I think, Dr. Gooch wouldn’t allow a conclusion to be made in either direction). Brad, I’m talking about even way before you graced us with your presence. This was ongoing, long before and after my time there.

After five years of this, I wasn’t enthusiastic about moving on, only to find BG acting like nobody’s ever asked the hard questions before. What is music? What is a composer? What is “good” music? It was presumptuous on behalf of the BG faculty to think they invented existentialism.

Anyway, I was wondering… if John Cage’s music is music—that is, if anything can be considered music, then… are we all really mushrooms?

I mean, you know the guy is self-proclaimed to be more of a mushroom collector than a composer. What makes a mushroom a mushroom? What makes it a “good” mushroom? What exactly is the role of the mushroom collector? What defines a mushroom collector? How many mushrooms does it take to screw in a light bulb? What’s the sound of one mushroom clapping? Every time a mushroom rings, does an angel get its wings? How many mushrooms could a dustbroom groom if a dustbroom could groom shrooms?

If a mushroom falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it count as a piece of music?

The definition of what is/isn't music (and all its arguments) is entirely subjective and is getting so ri-goddamed-diculous that it's paralyzing the act of creation itself.

Seriously, I think it's time to let it go. If you're worried about how others see you, or react to your music (and I know what you're thinking) then somewhere along the line someone forgot to tell you that there will always be someone who doesn't like you and/or your music just because they're: a) retarded, b) devoid of knowledge, c) an asshole, d) they hate the kind of music someone else writes and you're like so-and-so so you're guilty by association and basically fucked any way you look at it or e) all of the above (a critic). Actually the list could go on and on. Search your feelings. You know I'm right.

You're entitled to think whatever you want about whom/whatever you wish, but ultimately it's a vapid exercise. What many fail to realise is that the vessels carrying those arguments (and their purveyors) ran aground long ago. Despite the fact that the ships have splintered into millions of tiny little pieces some of the passengers are still clinging to the wreckage and many will always be too afraid to let go and explore. Just do what you want, write what you will.

So quit stalling and write some!!!

Oh, I almost forgot.

A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules; often with the aid of unsuspecting musicians.

Here here...

Oh, and I don't like mushrooms, they taste like poop to me (not that I know what actual poop tastes like...or do I?)!

So by definition (per Brad that is) a critic is:

A retarded, unlearned asshole who hates everything (except what he/she deems good) and everyone associated with said things that he/she hates...

hmm, interesting. I LIKE IT!!!

Okay.

1) I am not stalling, and I am composing.

2) I didn't post out of fear of my image. And I don't need to "let it go"... I called that one post Philosophy's End for a reason. You're taking this post way too seriously. I'm basically just being a wise-ass.

3) Poop actually doesn't taste that bad.

4) Your definition of a critic is dead-on.

Well, I could see that. I mean, that dead horse is looking rather pulpy by now...

Actually, it's less pulpy and more bloody mess from using a battle-axe rather than a blunt object.
