Orange Cream Soda

It’s another recurring joke taken from a phone conversation with the Captain, after the post The Mind as a Weapon. We were bantering that, theoretically, I could make someone cry by saying anything, really. Just by my demeanor. I could be walking the aisles at 7-Eleven, looking for orange cream soda and growing perplexed that the shelf was empty, and casually ask the clerk if they were out of orange cream soda, and they’d just burst into tears. The Captain naturally took this a lot farther, and in a different direction, under the presupposition that it’s just the combination of those words in that order that somehow inflicts terrible woe upon all but the speaker. For about the next twenty minutes, we acted out an impromptu screenplay in real-time. That’s how it goes with the Captain.

That’s it. Hardly grandiose. You had to be there. I never said it was funny. Happy now? Anything else you want to know?

Dance, monkey!

True. But after the latest Vendor vignette, I think we learned that he is apparently immune as well. Or anyone with Meat in a Cup on the mind for that matter.

So, the very concept of Meat in a Cup is a possible defense against the mind shattering blow of orange cream soda.

Bonus question: Does the speed at which you speak the words has any effect upon the reaction, for instance: can you utter them so slowly that they no longer technically count as a proper (or, at least, a very specific common) noun?

"Orange... cream... soda..."

Or can you blurt them out quickly to the same effect?

"Orangecreamsoda!"

Orange orange orangorange rangeo rangeo rangeo rangeorang eorang eorang eorang eorang eorangeor angeor angeor... etc. = Steve Reich

But by the time he can finish all 8, 455 words, nobody is listening to him anymore.

I think that's actually more indicative of Philip Glass.

No, see, I was doing phasing. Philip Glass would be just the same Goddamn three words over and over again, because it's minimalism for people who don't understand minimalism.

Philip Glass is the Kenny G of minimalist music.

Everyone's style changes. That's a given. It doesn't make the joke any less funny.

Every genre has its Kenny G. Kenny G is the Kenny G of smooth jazz (blech). Hans Zimmer is the Kenny G of film music.

Philip Glass sounds watered down. Hans Zimmer sounds juiced up. Opposite. Not the Kenny G of film music

Kenny G sucks out loud and comparing him to anyone enhances him more than it diminishes that which you are trying to destroy.

This road looks awfully familiar... hey, pull the car over for a second. Yeah. Hang on, I'm looking for someth--there it is! Yep. There's a big pile of who-gives-a-shit right next to our old tire tracks. We've been down this road enough. All right, we can leave now.
