Ruffling Some Feathers
I think I figured out why Scientology annoys me so much (other than the obvious farce about it, of course).
Dianetics, the precursor to Scientology, is basically L. Ron Hubbard’s alternative to psychology and metaphysical causality. He developed this system for over twenty years, and thus it is very thorough and is (seemingly) very credible. But then again, so is the Way of the Jedi. And it’s just as thorough by this point. Anyway, if Scientology had no merit, it wouldn’t recruit so many (seemingly) intelligent people. Right?
Here’s the connection: Dianetics has a lot in common with Schenkerian Analysis. That is why it bugs me so much.
Both are highly elaborate (and hard to swallow) innovations on “traditional” perspectives. Both have irritatingly elitist cult followings. Both are essentially unnecessary. I mean, really, so it took us as a race this long to finally come up with the right way of looking at things? And just out of the blue like that? No, both are innovative just for the sake of being innovative. The problem is that they caught on.
I know enough about both to know that I don’t want to know any more.
That’s right, I went there.
Thbtpbtpbt—jog on!

You're certainly not ruffling my feathers about either one. I find that a lot of composers don't care for traditional Schenkerian Analysis because of its analytical limitations. I couldn't stand it. Andrea really liked it though. It made sense to her.
It is, however, fun when listening to a piece of music that has overstayed its welcome by saying things like, "Schenker says you're done."

It's also fun to quote a lyric from a Tool song:
Fuck L. Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones...
I spent half an hour talking to a Scientologist on the Plaza when I first moved to KC.
I bear no ill tidings. I just get really easily annoyed.
Really easily. I should probably look into that. Hey, I'll bet Dianetics can help with that!

I like the "Hot Fuzz" reference in your post. I especially like that I recognized it at as a "Hot Fuzz" reference, thanks to my sister showing me the film over Christmas Break.
whoa, word verification is ujiwolf. That could be like a real mythical creature.

Whoa, I thought I alienated you a long time ago! It figures that you'd resurface for my most incendiary post.

I'm going to have to bring up this comparison in the office. (The musicology TAs share a hub with the theorists.) We've got an ultra-orthodox Schenkerian on the faculty, so it could be interesting to toss out the Schenker-Scientology analogy and see how it goes over.

I'm glad that such a seemingly useless and frivolous post in my eyes has proved the most... um, socially relevant (really?) in a long time.
