Reprise

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on making a digital orchestration of my master’s thesis, Volition. It’s been a blast from the past, slaving over this piece again for the first time in… not long enough.

The Finale playback / MIDI file had been hopelessly corrupt for mysterious reasons for a long time (which kind of screwed me at my thesis defense), so the plan was to use my new orchestral sound patches to start from scratch. I could at least import the notes into Logic, but I still had to work from the ground up. The idea was that it would end up being a decent listen—certainly no New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, but still a far cry better than general MIDI.

I kept telling myself, “Finally, at least, I can play a recording of it for people. Now, theoretically, if I can send it out with the score and parts, maybe someone somewhere someday will be willing to perform and record it. That would be a thing. Maybe, after that, I can actually use this piece to get some well-deserved recognition. Then, at last, I will have had something good come of all the insanity the waffling faculty put me through to get it done.”

I mostly relied on the keyboard in my bedroom to assist me, but I was also able to work on it at the office from time to time. Hey, it’s nice being unsupervised.

The more I worked on it, the more problems I discovered. The more solutions I found, the more sacrifices I had to make. I still couldn’t get any of the extended techniques to come across. I couldn’t get the pitch bends to work. The glissandi had to be emulated by chromatic flourishes instead. And where’s my trumpet mute? Don’t even talk to me about tempo markings. And combining the percussion staves into the orchestral percussion kit was not fun… nor was finding out that the general MIDI assignments would have been more appropriate. Sure, my patches sound better, but that doesn’t matter when you don’t actually have all the instruments you’re trying to use. Anvil, anyone? Ultimately, I had to hack and slash like crazy just to whittle it down to 16 channels, combining things that shouldn’t have been combined, and even letting go of a few things (like one measure of solo violin).

As the piece began to break down before my eyes, popping my optimistic bubble of zeal, my mentality would change progressively towards the pessimistic. “At least it’s better than nothing.”

The final, baffling problem: the playback still wouldn’t work for more than a few measures without telling me it was unable to process all the data in time, even after I fixed everything that would make it crap out. So what’s the problem? I don’t know. There’s nothing more I can do.

Another magnum ambition fails spectacularly. I want the last few weeks back. For that matter, I want the second year of grad school back. Volition keeps making itself exponentially more time-consuming and aggravating than it ever could have hoped to be. Still no payoff whatsoever. Bowling Green has returned to haunt me, tantalizing me with specters of gratification that are impossible to attain. Oh, the parallels… so many parallels to the actual thesis process… I just want to have a recording of my thesis!! Well, I can tell you one thing for certain: I am not going to waste another minute trying to salvage Volition. I have better things to do.

Fuck you, Bowling Green.

Yes, that's the first time I've dropped the F-bomb on my blog. I was "saving it for a special occasion." That's just how sincere I am.

You know, it's amazing that you've made it two full years without dropping the f-bomb (on your own blog). That's reasonably impressive.

Well, I figured if I managed to get through the thesis process without pushing the red button, I didn't want to waste its debut on anything less... shall we say... bothersome.

Let it go? Really? Really?

Way to condescend, as usual. Tell me, would you "let go" of getting a recording of a piece you composed? I think not. No composer would. Let alone a piece for big-ass orchestra. I don't compose things for nobody to ever hear.

Unless you mean "let go" of my anima towards BG? Hahaha. That has been said and done long ago, my friend. But way to paint me in an even worse light than I already do myself.

Meanwhile, I'm moving on to compose music that actually can and will be heard.

Far more.

You mean the brake drums? Yeah, I have them. That doesn't exactly solve the problem, though. But the thought of making another hack-job like Kings of Lusturia is rather nauseating...

You're like two kids that need a time out.

Vogler, stop picking on Bard.

Bard, stop being to sensitive.

Even with the highest end samples, synthesized orchestral arrangements will always be "hack jobs". Period.

Nothing beats a warm body in front of a music stand.

Until that glorious day, quitcherbitchin and get on with it.

Christ.

No one wants to read about your problems.

We only want to comment on it. :)

Um... okay, by "hack job" I was referring to the fact that Kings of Lusturia was a mixture of MIDI and live instruments. A very queasy mixture. But I worked with what I had, which is not much. That's what I meant by "hack job."

I think that if we'd managed to play it back in the performance hall with the volume turned up so it could be recorded in a live space even though it was an electronic score that might've helped some.

If you were trying to broadcast "movement onward" with this post, it missed me.

It is your blog... but if this blog, as your surrogate, was sitting in my living room on my couch, I'd tell it to stop bitchin and just work with what it has at its disposal. And "it doesn't work, it opposes me, I hate it" doesn't cut it. Whah.

I'd say, "Everybody deserves the right to vent. Once. Then you do something about it. You're a smart blog. Don't let your ignorance of technology thwart you."

If your blog didn't like the results it was getting, I'd say, "try again until you get them, dumbass. End of discussion." And then I'd walk away while your blog rolled on with that old chestnut about things not working out as expected. As if it just didn't "get it" after two years. Or four years. However long I've been listening to this music.

You can only bash your head into a brick wall so long, Tim. After awhile, you have to step back and reevaluate your approach to the problem. Perhaps, even, reevaluate what constitutes "the problem".

Your expectations, talent and technology will eventually meet each other. It may be an uneasy meeting, but there will be sexual tension. By the fifth season they'll move into together, taking the series to a new place that half the fans are wary of, and the other half don't give a shit about. God, sitcoms suck.

But, perhaps I did miss the point, being so warmly wrapped in all of this subtlety.

Another magnum ambition fails spectacularly.

The written word. Such a clumsy conveyance of communication.

That's right. Alliteration. Wanna fight about it?

.......what are you talking about?!

THE.
FILE.
WON'T.
WORK.

It's not a matter of "it doesn't exceed my expectations."

BUT. Thank you both for highlighting the fact that Volition is just as irrelevant as everything else I could possibly produce. We are all wasteful conglomerations of carbon. Nobody will ever, ever give half a shit about anything any of us does.

The economic law of sunk costs says that I shouldn't obsess over getting this to work simply because "I've come this far." I'm cutting my losses. I need some serious OUTPUT. Fuck Volition, I'm working on other stuff now. Other stuff that still nobody gives a shit about, but at least I'm not gathering moss. Fuck moss.

Incidentally, I was aware that the file wasn't working (I did read your post, oh, three times or so, just so that maybe I could be well informed enough to post a comment that perhaps maybe wouldn't draw your irrationally high strung nitpicking ire)- but if you'd read your own post, you'd note that that factoid was buried very well within a rant consisting of mostly the same content that a majority of this blog (as far as the topic of composition is concerned) consists of:

Technology sucks. It wastes my time.

We are all wasteful conglomerations of carbon. Nobody will ever, ever give half a shit about anything any of us does.

Yes, slightly out of context, but it represents your disposition. A rather sad one at that. My question is, why the fuck try at all?

It's so much more fun to complain.

And don't bother referencing the conversation that we had post-post, where you reversed engines and said the intent was as a farewell to Volition and hello to trouble free days ahead for new and exciting musical ventures.

If that's what you meant, write it.

If you don't like the comments, be they earnest or no, then disable them.

Then again, I doubt you have a blog to listen to yourself type...

So, READ the comments. Yes, there's quite a bit of need to separate the wheat from the chaff, but I guarantee you, there is something of substance to be found.

With friends like you...

To paraphrase you, I did read your comments, oh, three times or so apiece, just so that maybe I could be well informed enough to post a reply... you bastard.

We are all wasteful conglomerations of carbon. Nobody will ever, ever give half a shit about anything any of us does.

That was meant to discourage you all as well. And you said it best. "Why the fuck try at all?"

Personally, my appetite for productivity is insatiable, no matter who actually ends up giving fractions of shits about my work. Meaning, I just want to create as much as I can before I die. I know my creations will never be immortalized, but I don't want to stare into the headlights of an oncoming semi, sliding on the ice, thinking, "Damn, I should have written more."

I somehow expected a little more sympathy. Well, maybe not sympathy, but mutual disappointment. I would have thought people were at least curious about hearing the piece, if for no other reason than to have a glimpse into some of the hoops the faculty made me jump through and then refused to give me my well-earned salmon.

I had a very lengthy list of grievances to further articulate for your understanding, but I thought better of it. This blog has gotten ugly enough for one post.
