All That Remains
It’s the last week of classes, then finals week. The New Music Ensemble concert was about two weeks ago, and it went over well, I guess. My tubist friend Amanda is excited about me reworking my cue into a piece for her (it was originally intended as such).
The gamelan final concert was Thursday, so now that’s over. I finished the draft of my final project in counterpoint. Although there is definitely a counterpoint assignment from about three weeks ago that I never did…
Dr. Engebretsen has jury duty tomorrow and Wednesday, so I’ll be teaching Wednesday instead of Friday this week. I have one more round of papers to grade, then all I have left to do for my assistanceship is grade sightsinging finals next week.
Tuesday, May 2 is when I’m giving my analysis presentation to the faculty. My beloved superiors, in all their prudence, have scheduled my thesis defense immediately after that. Two significant presentations, back-to-back. Until then, there are plenty of preparatory hoops to jump through.
It’s pretty much the worst possible thing they could throw at me at this point. I’m actually not at all surprised, either.
Didn’t I say it before? This is what I do.
It’s the culmination of my academic life. It’s all that stands between me and everything I should have been doing all along. Composing, for example. Learning orchestration. I don’t know, maybe even playing my primary instrument for a change.
Now I can clearly see every obstacle before me. All that remains will be taken care of soon. Every day is a race, though. I can feel time running out… I just hope I can spend time with each of my friends one last time before it’s too late. Speaking of too late, I have to get Logic Pro 7 and Sibelius 4 while I still have my student discount.
I don’t think I’ll go to my commencement in August.

I was beginning to wonder where you went.
I don't know yet if I'll make it for the annual camping trip.
I just have to get out of here first.

I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.

We may capsize, but at least we don't run into the shore after every single turn.
This task was appointed to me. If I do not find a way, no one will.
